Astroworld will close forever at end of 2005 season

From 11 News Staff Reports
Six Flags, Inc. announced Monday that it will permanently close its AstroWorld theme park in Houston at the end of the 2005 season.
The company said 119 permanent jobs will be lost as a result of the closure, with a number of employees likely to be offered jobs at other Six Flags properties. The park also employs approximately 1,500 workers on a seasonal basis. The 2005 seasonal staff will not be affected.
The 109-acre site will be marketed to the real estate development community.
The company expects to make a tidy profit given the property’s size and location within a revitalized and dynamic area of the city and its proximity to so many of Houston’s civic, healthcare and business enterprises."

I guess it was bound to happen. I know many people have memories of that place from all over the South. It looks like the corporate will make a tidy profit from the sale to developers though.
This is so sad. We had so many good times. I wonder if another amusement company will relocate to Houston to take its place?
I just hope someone like Tillman F (Landry's owners) buy it up. Wow what at place they could make out of it. I am afraid that it will be developed anyway, but it would be nice to keep it. I worked there as a teen and have pictures of my family going when it opened.

Urban amusement parks never work. They eventually become gang Meccas. One would hope Six Flags would make a profit from the sale. They apparently weren't profitable running the park, and the reason most companies exist is to make a profit (that zany Capitalism thing). My family and I went there once when we first moved to this area, and it was expensive yet rundown. The metal detectors at the entrance should have tipped me off. Let's hope it's developed. One can only make so many movies at abandoned amusement parks. It's true the Landry's people could probably make something out of it. On the other hand, maybe some upscale condominiums might be nice with some private secondary schools for people that feel public education doesn't work.
As crowded as the medical center has become I would like to see that as a possible alternative. I'm going to miss it.

Hopefully they will include some parks and additional trees with whatever building they do. The city sorely needs it. That area has always been a bit of an eye-sore.
I wonder if Six Flags will build another local amusement park?
Not likely when the real estate business is so lucrative!
We really enjoyed the seasonal passes and the location near Reliant Arena. It's too bad the parking arrangement was changed though.
This was one of the first theme parks I remember attending. We thought the Astrodome was the 8th wonder of the world. It's hard to believe that the park is closing. Maybe they will replace it with something better.

Are you really a Gorilla or just promoting the zoo. As for urban amusement parks I believe AW was there for decades. That doesn't denote failure, only rising property values made the temptation too much for a greedy corporate office. As for the "capitalist" comment I think China now claims to be a very capitalistic society. What a combo, totalitarianism, communism & capitalism. Kinda sounds like a local neighborhood I have read much about lately. What ever happened to democracy?
