Bhuchar, Smelley win; Jail, library bonds pass

By:SESHADRI KUMAR, Editor 05/15/2006

Sonal Bhuchar and Steve Smelley handsomely won in the keenly contested Fort Bend ISD elections on Saturday, thus suggesting the voter preference for a board that will move in a different direction than it was after the May 2005 election.

In Stafford, Ken Mathew became the first Asian American to be elected for city council and with the maximum number of votes, he joins the two incumbents, Mike Sachs and Cecil Willis, who were re-elected.

In Missouri City,. Mayor Allen Owen easily retained his seat, defeating challenger Grayling Poats.
In other area elections incumbent mayors of Arcola and Fulshear were defeated.

Fort Bend County voters also overwhelmingly approved the three bond propositions - $85 million bond issue to build a new 984-bed jail, $24.50 million bond issue for two new libraries and $20.50 million bond issue for six new buildings and renovations to the Jane Long Annex. . .

Even Mr. Kumar admits that the FBISD election was a referendum on Lisa Rickert and the direction she has taken FBISD and the voters rejected her leadership.

"Finally, in response to the many people who have asked… Yes…the Save our Schools site (www.save-our-schools.blogspot.com ) will come back on-line with fresh news about District and education issues in the next week or so. We will continue to attend and report on Board meetings and actions as well as serve as a community forum on FBISD." -- Mitton

You are right, we owe her much. Remember Sienna people, including your FBCP developer run yahoo group, would have never known about the LOMS and BBMS zoning battles without it. Your wonderful Bev printed nothing on it (the Sun did though).

Better keep your eyes open or your new friends may stab you in the back (metaphorically of course). . . ;-I

You are right. We can credit at least half of the negativity currently present in FBISD directly to Liz Mitton.

She did more to help Smelley and Bhuchar get elected than any other person in the county.

FYI- Mitton's op ed was hardly an "exclusive" for this publication. She posted it on Fort Bend Now and Safety.websoaring.com and probably every other publication she could think of.

Thought twice might help you understand better!

. . . . ;-)

-We're not buying what your selling (we did once and look what it got us). SO go sell it somewhere else!

Some applicable democratic quotes:

You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. -Winston Churchill

and who can forget this one:

You ask, What is our policy? I will say; “It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us: to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy.” You ask, What is our aim? I can answer with one word: Victory—victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival.

We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and the oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. -Winston Churchill

______________
and of course who can forget the Roman slave revolt lead by Spartacus!

Good luck my little shadow. . . ;-) . . . and bring it on! (Tell your friend JK I've been very disappointed in his lame efforts thus far, not even a good start to this)!!!

Internet imposter: you can say it twice, but it doesn't make it the truth. I didn't read Liz's blog, and I was fully aware of what was happening with LOMS and Baines. A central member of what you refer to as the "developer run yahoo group" was a member of the zoning committee that came up with the ABC plan, and she along with the other Sienna residents who went to the flame board meeting when the LOMS parents staged their protest, or who reviewed the meeting online, knew that the zoning issue wasn't dead. If you needed Liz to tell you, that was your problem -- the information was out there. And don't forget how it all ended, not with rezoning, but with a spurious decision by the acting, underqualified superintendent to move 120+ current 5th graders zoned to LOMS to Baines. If the board had actually moved to hire someone that's qualified when they engineered the removal of the old superintendent, rather than spending the better part of a year bickering among themselves, there would have been fewer voters who approached the ballot box with an attitude of "anyone but someone aligned with Rickert." Maybe that's not the best reason for choosing a candidate, but it's no worse than "anyone but someone who's supported by the developer."

Friend of the developers:

Your logic as your word has no meaning here. Reread the posts again and understand that you are waisting time. The replacement BOT people just elected are filling in for "old guard" that were already in place (no big move in the reform board). While you work to deseat the other reformers, we will work to get the truth out and replace yours. A district wide solution to the zoning problem is the only solution until the legislature forces the big companies to kick-in the land (free or nearly) to reduce new school start up.

As for the contributions of those involved with the committee that looked at the zoning, it is very interesting that the developer's people from here conveniently leave out the zoning & tax buster multi-family that is slated for this area and only reported housing growth. The tax killer is the apartments in North and additional high density housing in the South plan (fixed last summer in the DA by their mayor).

Keep spinning while we keep getting the word out on the real agenda of your group. This will be posted twice for you along with the Churchill quotes. Tell your friends we aren't finished with their mayor either and will be running candidates against him until he's gone. Independent politicians who will listen to the voters is the goal. You all can keep trying to sabotage that effort but you will FAIL in the end. Say good bye to cronyism/special interest control in this area as was begun in Fulshear, Arcola and Katy!

Remember Howell only lost by 190 votes, so the party is next! Enjoy.
