If you own your home, you may belong to a homeowner’s association. They’re supposed to work to keep up the neighborhood.

But some of them may be out of control.

There’s a continuing controversy over powerful associations that have the ultimate weapon: the ability to take your home.
What’s in these letters kept this homeowner awake, they raised his blood pressure and made one woman want to hire a lawyer.

“That night, I couldn’t go to sleep,” said condo owner Yehya Chreidi.
Condo owner Shirley Schuett, who wanted to hire the lawyer, said, “It’ll cost a lot of money and I don’t have that kind of money, but I have to do something to save my home from these people.”

These are neighbors living in the condominiums on the west side.
As owners, they have an association that collects monthly fees to pay for maintenance, garbage pickup, cable TV.
And the law in Texas says if you don’t pay the homeowners’ association has a right to take your home and to foreclose on it which is exactly what some letters threatened.
But these residents aren’t ready to give in that easily. . . (click title link for more)

If this bill passes homeowners will lose more property rights. This bill will give developers an additional 7+ years of control over your HOA board (which means they will control these budgets you pay into) as well as further strengthen the foreclosure powers. . .

Here's an update on the FBC campaign contributions scandal from BrazosRiver.com involving the Fla company (as this thing grows in scope):

September 29 - Well, well, well ….. come to find out, those PBS&J fellas did a little dabbling in illegal campaign contributions.

With respect to the campaign finance charge against Deloach, court records reflect that in 2004, Deloach learned that PBSJ supported the U.S. Senate campaign of Mel Martinez. Deloach wrote a personal contribution check to the Martinez campaign and asked four PBSJ employees to do the same. The four employees, and two of their spouses, made contributions totaling $11,000, for which each was unlawfully reimbursed.

The good news is that should trigger an investigation here in Fort Bend over both “missing” and “found” campaign contributions to our county commissioners. The bad news is that we don’t have an investigator.

And that’s double-dog bad news because the Miami Herald has this little ditty today.

PBS&J has lawsuits against Garcia, Licata and at least 19 of their friends and relatives to recoup portions of the embezzled funds that are still outstanding.

“Our client recognizes her criminal responsibility and is deeply remorseful,'' said Benson Weintraub, Garcia's Fort Lauderdale lawyer. ''But equally significant is her commendable status as a whistle-blower, exposing rampant political corruption and illegal campaign contributions.'' He credited Garcia for alerting authorities to the political contributions.

Rampant political corruption and illegal campaign contributions? Our commissioners sure have themselves some dandy friends, don’t they?
