Lake Olympia residents in Missouri City will be glad their voices have been heard and the plan for a gas station in their neighborhood has been dropped by the developer.

Several residents from Lake Olympia turned out at the May 10 Missouri City Planning and Zoning Commission meeting to oppose a developer's plan to rezone property in their community to accommodate a gas station.
The station was to be located on a four-acre lot at Lake Olympia Parkway and Peninsulas Drive, across from the entrance to Swan Lake. Armed with more than 300 signatures in a petition, the group listed many concerns about the proposed rezoning. . .

Here's a good one:

Arguing with a lawyer is like mud wrestling with a pig: after a while you realize that the pig actually enjoys it.

I think what I find most interesting about these cases is the fact that in this one the developer was responsive to the community, while in the Mo-City apt battles last year, a different developer, decided to do battle rather than meet with their customer base. Certainly different results.

It would seem that an improvement for this entire process would be for the developer groups to identify interested stake-holders (not hand selected) and involve them in the planning phases. This may not stop all NIMBY battles, but may help reduce them and the companies would certainly gain in community PR. A better model all the way around and much more cost effective in the long run.
