Greyling Poats Announces For Missouri Mayoral Race--

The following is the official campaign announcement for Greyling Poats seeking the position of mayor in Missouri City during the May 2008 elections from FortBendWeb.com:

Friends,

With great anticipation of the positive we can make in Missouri City, I am announcing my candidacy for the office of Mayor. The past has taught us Missouri City cannot depend on one subdivision to sustain the standard of living that was the norm here. Our potential is boundless if we use the assets within our corporate city limits and only bring in additional areas to add to our greatness, not deter from the same. Great cities utilize ideas and criticism of it's citizens to prosper and grow, failing cities are staid, barren of new ideas and keep leaders in office far to long eliminating the vitality and vibrancy that it needs. This campaign is not against the incumbent and his cohort. It is a race to vitalize the character and direction of our City.

To assess where we are as a community, one must ask, has the quality of my life improved under the current leadership? Has this administration had ample time to improve the quality of our lives? Have my property values increased while my taxes have been lowered? Have the amenities of my neighborhood and city; doctors offices, hospitals, clinics, schools, grocery stores, churches, coffee shops, golf courses, small businesses, facilities for youth, bookstores, and landfills etc., improved or declined under the current administration? How does my community compare to cities with similar neighborhoods and facilities? Are we better, the same or has this mayor and council let us deteriorate while offering a myriad of excuses on why they cannot do anything to attract businesses and families to Missouri City proper?

Where is the focus of this mayor and council? How often do you hear your neighborhood in a positive light from the current administration? Does this mayor and council spend my tax dollars on enhancements i.e. mobility, drainage, street signs, side-walk repair, bridge construction and improvements, traffic lights, festivals, etc. for the benefit of those who pay MISSOURI CITY TAXES or is their primary concern with the EXTRA TERRITORIAL JURISDICTION that does not pay city property taxes? These are only a few of the questions one must ask when electing a new administration. My campaign request to the Citizens of Missouri City is to critically think about these concerns and other issues you know of before selecting your Mayor. I will file my candidacy for the office of Mayor of Missouri City, Texas. With your help, I and other candidates seeking councilmatic office, will again make Missouri City the preeminent community in Texas.

Greyling Poats
Missouri City, TX

I just want to wish Mr. Poats the best in his efforts to improve the community. It is a noble effort and one that more should participate in.

Hopefully a new administration and other challengers will be able to keep the promise made repeatedly by this mayor and council to lower our taxes, which they have broken many times over the last few years on the promise of more commercial development. They seem to forget that city services must expand when you seek this pace of growth, which, in turn, is carried on the backs of the current taxpayers.

Owen, Wyatt and Jimerson have been in office long enough (several decades) to have addressed many of these issues, but instead they neglect all for two primary areas (their own subdivision and new development near the city limits). According to a chronicle article only a few weeks ago the city manager admitted to "slipping" the bonds. This means changing what the funding is for that the taxpayers have approved. I wonder which projects they are "slipping" them for? A road near the ETJ is being looked at for a developer that contributes to many on this council along with diverting millions to the lone solution presented by these gentlemen regarding the QVCC. Have Owen, Wyatt and Jimerson, who live and belong to that golf club, even considered recusing themselves from the voting? Have they considered alternatives to LIMIT the cities risk exposure on the purchase and reclamation of the closed courses? Their own NGS study, that city taxpayers footed the bill for, estimated 10-20 million to get the courses up and running again. Why isn't the QVMUD and QVFund involved with contributing to the purchase and revitalization on this Owen lead project? Why didn't the mayor do something about this years ago when the development company, known for selling off old courses, purchased it? Why isn't the city enforcing the current ordinances for grass and property maintenance on the owner now (the high grass and endless ant mounds can't be helping the property values in that neighborhood). If this is about the city and not THEIR course then why didn

(continued). . .If this is about the city and not THEIR course then why didn't they attempt to save the WillowWisp GC last year in MC district A? Perhaps because 4 of the current council (including the mayor) didn't live in that area?

What do you think about Poats' announcement? What do you think about Mayor Owen's leadership? Whom would you endorse?

"Poats, 56, has criticized Owen and the city council on a range of issues, one of which is the alleged government's neglect of the city's older communities such as neighborhoods and commercial properties along Texas Parkway while a "disproportionate" focus has been placed on the development of Texas 6 where there are numerous high-end subdivisions."

Wyatt, Owen and Jimerson have been in office long enough to have addressed many of these issues, but instead they neglect all for two primary areas (their own subdivision and new development near the city limits). According to a chronicle article only a few weeks ago the city manager admitted to "slipping" the bonds. This means changing what the funding is for that the taxpayers have approved. I think many other questions need to be asked of these three who have been on council for several decades, like who signed off on the expanding landfill at MCs back door? Why didn't they oppose it and why have they not tried to stop it during all the public hearings??? Are these people your representatives looking after your health and best interests??? They've apparently got a Lowe's moving into the old hospital, but NO plans on the table to replace that all too valuable service, unless they are holding that news for pre-election too...

The most important question, given the long list on Owens campaign disclosure reports of out of area special interests, IS DO YOU TRUST THEM??? If not you know your duty and that is to seek proactive change and replace a council and mayor that NO LONGER REPRESENTS YOUR WANTS OR NEEDS and is using your tax dollars for projects they have a personal interest in.

May is just around the corner and the school board races, along with the city council races, are all important for local concerns. Get out and VOTE!!!

I would very much like to see new leadership, term limits and an end to special interest pandering in this community.

I was very happy to read that Mr. poats is running for mayor. It is about time that we had a leader that has the interests of Missouri City residents at heart rather than the interests of the big out of city developers.

I would be willing to bet that this quote is correct, "or is their primary concern with the extra territorial jurisdiction that does not pay city property taxes?"

Marilyn,

I get that feeling too. When I have met some of the current people serving they seem more interested in the next ribbon cutting than really listening. It's as if they just look right through you.

I know Poats. He's approachable, concerned about the community and would make a genuinely good Mayor. I am really excited about this guy taking office. Good changes will be made. The Council will be approachable about community concerns. Development and City monies will be available to all subdivisions, not just the Mayor's pets. This is GREAT NEWS!

That is your choice, but understand that this blog endorsed Mr. Poats some time ago and will continue to support his run for honest, open and no string attached government. See Allen Owens 30 day report here:

As for the removals, they are unsolicited ads, not opposition posts as are common on blogs...so try again!
