Arcola’s Rosie Rojas said she is the lone member of City Council against the McKeever Road project.
“I’m all for the city to grow,” she said. “But not when you’re going to condemn property. I can’t understand how the county and the city can take the side of a business owner who doesn’t even live in Fort Bend County.”
Here's another choice quote. --So the owner doesn't even live here and wants to sue the commissioners? Why don't the collective homeowners groups from this area sue the airport or at least contact the Senate on this. Wasn't a law recently passed about this type of private take over?
I was told by a commissioner that the Sienna/Johnson developers were supporting the road alterations that will lead to the jets coming to Arcola airport.

The airport has been promoted behind the scenes by the GFBCEDC for years now. There has been zero effort to develop a plan that is in the best interests of the community of Arcola...it's been scripted by the airport owner Jamie Griffith, and I presented several documents to Commissioner's Court yesterday illustrating this fact. The County and City voted down the expansion in 2003, but Commissioner's Court approved/accepted the Feasibility Study (the vote was influenced by Judge Hebert's incorrect statement, let me rephrase that, outright lie! that if the County did not approve it, they would be required to repay the $500,000 that Tom Delay apprpriated for the study). Therefore, the Judge is responsible for Griffith having a "Plan" to take to the FAA, ultimately becoming a reliever airport and, most importantly, eligible to receive federal funds. Now, they are allowing Mr. Griffith to select the layout of McKeever / S. Post Oak to maximize his private interest at the expense of Arcola's well-being, and use the County's power of eminent domain to take other people's private property. No affected property owners were notified of the plans on the CC agenda to take their property...the County likes to act first, then inform later.
The GFBEDC also led a failed attempt to wrestle a "Home Depot" from the Katy EDC last year and place it where? Jamie Griffith's property in Arcola - what a coincidence.

Road Diversion, Airport Plans Anger Landowners

Angry Arcola area residents assailed Fort Bend County commissioners on Tuesday, attacking county plans to alter McKeever Road, which they called an effort to take property on behalf of the owner of Houston Southwest Airport.
County Commissioners Court was scheduled to vote on land acquisition that would allow the McKeever project to move forward. Plans would alter the road, diverting it to South Post Oak, which runs east to State Highway 6. The existing McKeever roadway south of Post Oak would be abandoned.
In the process, 100 feet of right-of-way would have to be acquired from land owners in nearby Newpoint Estates.
“Before you perform any actions resulting in the ultimate closure of McKeever Road, you need to present to the taxpayers of this county just what justification exists for this action,” said Arcola resident Tom Hilton.
In a statement he read to commissioners, Hilton maintained efforts to divert the road were part of “a pattern of ethically challenged decision making by Fort Bend County officials at the urging of this airport owner and the Fort Bend Economic Development Council over a several-year time span.”
He referred to Jamie Griffith, owner of the airport, who did not attend the meeting.
“This is not to accommodate the airport,” County Judge Robert Hebert said, but to accommodate commercial development in Arcola, to boost the city’s tax revenue.
Hebert said what the county is considering amounts to a three-way deal: Griffith would donate right-of-way property to the county, plus $500,000 to help pay construction costs for the road changes. Once the county builds the altered roadway, he said, Griffith would agree to allow the City of Arcola to annex 200 acres of land Griffith owns north of McKeever road.
In his statement to Commissioners Court, Hilton attacked the proposal: “So in other words, Mr. Griffith’s $500,000 has bought him the right to use the county’s power to condemn other people’s private property for his own developmental purposes.”
Commissioners went into executive session to discuss the matter, and emerged an hour later without taking action.
Precinct 1 Commissioner Tom Stavinoha said members of the court weren’t comfortable signing off on the three-way deal because it wasn’t legally binding.
“We would prefer a contract between Griffith, the city of Arcola and the county,” he said.
Stavinoha said the existing McKeever Road location is in violation of certain Federal Aviation Administration design and safety standards. If county commissioners vote not to divert the roadway, “Jamie is going to sue us, because we have killed his ability to improve his airport.”
That statement didn’t sit well with two property owners whose land would be taken as a result of the project.
“The proposed road is going to cut off half of my property,” said Caleb Makukutu. “The road would be right in my back yard.”
Makukutu said his family has intended to build their home on the 8-acre-plus property he owns, but they’ve put off their plans for more than two years because of the on-again, off-again, on-again proposals for expanding the airport.
“One way or the other, they’re going to get the property,” he said.

I wonder if the new law passed by the Senate that has gone into effect recently can be used to stop this private GFBEDC and Hebert’s attempt to help the owner of the Arcola airport. Can letting jets fly over several new and many older neighborhoods in Missouri City and Arcola (some 10-15,000 residents/homeowners—conservatively) be listening to your voters?
If the owner of the airport wants to sue the county over it then perhaps the private land owners and additional 10-15k residents/homeowners of the area can sue the airport owner for the value that will be lost in the fly-way on those homes? Aren’t you all getting a little tired of hearing these people threaten to sue what is supposed to be your local government representatives because they bend over backwards for the “economic interests” rather than the voter or homeowners? I hope someone runs against some of these fellows this year!

It would be nice to see someone represent the homeowners interests in this community. This “three-way deal” seems to benefit the business interests in this area but not the voters. I’m sure this area of the county will be well represented at the polls this year after this sell out.
How will this move enhance home purchases/values and commercial development in Sienna Plantation which is directly on the approach to this airport? It makes it pretty hard to sell your home with the roar of jets coming in a few hundred feet up. I also wonder why Sienna/Johnson Development is supporting this plan?

I want to thank Mr. Hebert for listing many of the campaign contributors backing his re-election on the back-page of this weeks Star. I didn't see Jaime Griffith on the incomplete list but did see one of the large development companies on that list involved in this "three-way" deal. The documents submitted yesterday span over 6 years and show a persistent attempt to expand this airport, involving Bob Hebert, Herb Appel, Bob Brown, and the GFBEDC. Arcola’s welfare has never been an issue – ever. The $500,000 scam of a Feasibility Study never had any other airports in mind for the County to purchase, other than Houston SW and I can prove that. What a waste of taxpayer $. I did an open records request to Arcola to see what studies were done to determine why this layout of S. Post Oak was the most advantageous – the only documents I got back were prepared by the airport. Closing McKeever Rd. will be detrimental to the businesses located on FM 521/6 as the traffic will take the overpass.
For the Judge to claim they are doing this for the economic benefit of Arcola is nothing more than propaganda – the last 6 years of documentation illustrates this clear as crystal.
The Commissioner’s Court can wield their power by condemning people’s private property now, but the VOTERS will be wielding their power at the primaries this Spring. I promise you that.
